So, my players are in Ikath. They didn't find the undead-creating magic item, but they killed Zuur and got their reward from the city.
Then they returned to Ikath, where they had noticed that something dragged away bodies that the PCs dropped in the sewers (as one does when bandits attack). So they killed some thugs, dropped their bodies in the sewer, and then hid in the sewer. After a little while, 4 zombies appeared and grabbed the dead bodies and dragged them away.
The players followed the zombies until they reached an iron-bar door (not a portcullis, but one that swung). The door was unlocked, and the zombies dragged the bodies through the door, and then the rogue struck, killing one zombie and injuring another. The party discovered that it was a wight that opened the door, but they killed him and the zombies and found a key on his body, taking it and locking the portcullis behind them.
Then they continued on until they found another portcullis, which they also unlocked with the key (the key won't unlock any more doors, just these two). They locked it, turned the corner, and found themselves facing a vampire spawn. They defeated the vampire spawn easily enough.
I've got to find a way to slow this party down. Four 4th levels and one 3rd level character.
Besides continually ramping up the undead, I need to use some gating techniques to slow them down and make them do something other than beeline for the Lich. I've decided that some poison traps (which don't affect most undead) will be in order, as well.
Anyone want to help me make a megadungeon under Ikath?
